Window Mode

back to: Main Page

Window mode refers to running an application (such as Neverwinter Nights) in a window so that other applications can be seen, rather than giving the application the entire screen to use (full screen mode).

Option 1

  • Under Windows, it is possible to switch between full screen and windowed mode while the game is running (if windowed mode is allowed), by using the <Alt-Enter> key combination.
  • Resize the window as needed.

Option 2 (if Option 1 does not work)

Neverwinter Nights will start in window mode if certain lines from the file nwn.ini (found in the NWN directory) are edited as follows (see text in red).

Display Options
Width=1680
Height=1050
BitsPerPixels=32
RefreshRate=60
TexturePack=3
SafeMovie=0
FullScreen=0
AllowWindowedMode=1

UseLargeFont=0

The first of these red lines is the section of the file; the latter two lines must appear before another file section is started. The second line controls the mode when the game starts (a zero indicates window mode, while a 1 indicates full screen mode). The third line controls whether or not window mode is available, potentially overriding the second line. The desktop resolution should be greater than the game's resolution (for example, desktop at 1024x768 and NWN at 800x600). Otherwise, Neverwinter Nights will ignore its resolution setting and run at 800x600 instead. Furthermore, when running under Windows 7 or Vista, it might be necessary to run the program in compatibility mode for Windows XP.
